A structural account of why directed effort compounds in some structures and dissipates in others.
This is not a normative claim about where effort should go. It is a structural one: whether a unit of directed energy — capital, attention, or effort — produces a lasting effect depends entirely on a property of the receiving structure, not on the size or sincerity of the input.
Let E denote a unit of directed energy (money spent, attention given,
effort invested), and S a structure that receives it.
S is neutralizing if its post-receipt state
S' is not meaningfully different from S, and
E does not propagate to produce further downstream state changes in
agents connected to S. Formally: f(E, S) → 0 as the
interaction concludes. The energy terminates at the point of contact.
S is multiplying if receiving E
produces a state change that itself becomes a source of further directed energy:
f(E, S) = E + f(E₁, S₁) + f(E₂, S₂) + … — a recursive, compounding
relation, not a terminal one.
The distinction is not about intent, effort, or moral weight. It is about whether
S has a mechanism to retain, redistribute, or re-derive value from
what it receives.
The theorem is not domain-specific. It recurs, independently derived, across at least four unrelated fields:
The same unit of capital produces radically different downstream effect
depending on the state of the receiving agent. Directed at an already-saturated
agent, marginal utility approaches zero: f(E, S) ≈ 0. Directed at
an agent operating near a capability threshold, the same unit can cross that
threshold and initiate a new productive cycle: f(E, S) > E.
Capital directed at a structure with local re-circulation is re-spent within the
same connected system multiple times before leaving it. Capital directed at a
structure with immediate extraction exits the local system on contact. Same
input, different topology, different f.
Market exchange systematically obscures the social relation between producer and consumer, replacing it with a relation between price and object. This is not incidental friction; it is structurally load-bearing for neutralization: if the relation cannot be traced, it cannot be corrected, and an untraceable relation cannot accumulate trust, reciprocity, or any compounding social value — only price.
A critique of a structure, once successful enough to acquire symbolic value, becomes absorbable by that same structure as a commodity. This produces a counterintuitive but rigorous corollary: recuperation is not evidence that the critique was false. It is evidence that the neutralizing structure's absorptive capacity extends even to artifacts built specifically to resist it — the strongest possible confirmation of the mechanism, not a refutation.
A platform optimized for engagement does not merely fail to preserve directed discourse; it repurposes the energy of that discourse as input to its own optimization target, irrespective of the discourse's content or valence. Independently, catharsis research (Bushman et al.) has found that venting frequently reinforces rather than discharges the underlying affective state — meaning even the subjective sense of release accompanying the neutralized act may itself be a further engagement signal, not a genuine terminus.
These four domains are not analogous by coincidence — they are instances of a single structural property already established elsewhere: a system either has a mechanism for cumulative coordination, or it does not.
A structure with cumulative coordination — one where a given resolution updates a
shared, durable state that subsequent resolutions can draw on — is, by definition,
a multiplying structure: f recurses because there is somewhere for
the recursion to be stored. A structure without it resets at each interaction,
regardless of how much energy any single interaction carries: f
cannot recurse because nothing persists between interactions.

raw input magnitude. Whether the input is a resolved namespace path, a monetary
unit, or a unit of attention is incidental. What determines
f(E, S) — neutralization or multiplication — is whether
S retains state.
The relevant question when directing energy is never "how much." It is: does the receiving structure have a mechanism to retain what it receives, or does it only have a mechanism to absorb it?
A structure can be large, prestigious, or urgent, and still be purely absorptive.
A structure can be small, slow, and unnoticed, and still be genuinely cumulative.
Size and visibility are properties of S that are uncorrelated with
the presence of an accumulation function — which is precisely why the distinction
is easy to miss and expensive to ignore.
